Elizabeth Rule

Meet Our People – The Enduring Spirit of the Chickasaw Nation

Dr. Elizabeth Rule is a professor of Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies at American University in Washington, DC. And offers an extraordinary bona fide, "Being Chickasaw has been a central aspect of my life ... ever since I was a child, I had a strong Chickasaw identity."

Dr. Rule's work has been published in American Quarterly and the American Indian Culture and Research Journal, and her research has been featured in the Washington Post, The Atlantic and NPR. Her manuscript, Reproducing Resistance: Gendered Violence and Indigenous Nationhood, received the "Julien Mezey Award."

But no matter how far she travels, how many she enlightens, being a Chickasaw always brings her home. "I've been very fortunate to have strong role models within my own family. My father works as an attorney representing tribal interests. So, I was inspired to always think about ways to be engaged with, and give back to, my own indigenous community."
