Meet Our People – The Enduring Spirit of the Chickasaw Nation

Secretary of State for the Chickasaw Nation Bill Lance knows how important it is to remember his roots and the generations of Chickasaw people who came before him and contributed to the Nation's success today. "The investment that our ancestors made in us so many years ago to get us to where we're at today is something that we always have to remember," he says. "And we would not be in the position that we are today if we weren't standing on that foundation." He takes great pride in his family and wants to pass down his sense of cultural pride to his granddaughters. He strives to teach them to respect their heritage and their ancestors. But he considers the entirety of the Chickasaw Nation to be his family and hopes his work to build Chickasaw commerce makes a difference in their lives. "It kind of starts with your immediate family, but then you've got your extended Chickasaw family, and just like any family member, you don't want to let anybody down. You want to be there for them. It's bigger than yourself."
