From cultural reenactments to language preservation, Chickasaw elder Rose Shields-Jefferson dedicates her time and her efforts to the preservation of Chickasaw language, history and culture. "We're doing our best to try to keep it going," says Rose. "I really want young people to learn as much as they can about our tradition. You learn something, you teach somebody else." As a member of the Rosetta Stone Chickasaw cast and one of fewer than 50 fluent Chickasaw speakers left, Rose uses her knowledge of the Chickasaw language to preserve the traditions of her ancestors. "I'm happy that I can speak the Chickasaw language," she says. "I'm proud to be Chickasaw. I just want just the young Chickasaw kids to be proud, too."
