Centuries before the city of Memphis was built, the Mississippi overlook was known as the Chickasaw Bluffs. This area of high ground over the homelands was where a keen eye could be kept on river traffic, making it a highly coveted position. Later, when land cessions put the bluffs in American hands, the Chickasaws moved west for their new home in Indian Territory. Even so, hundreds of years later, Memphis still echoes the epic past of the Chickasaw Bluffs.
