Chickasaw Nation News

Brad and Quin begin this episode of CNTV News at the annual Chickasaw Arts Academy. The two-week summer camp welcomes over 300 students to explore a variety of disciplines, including textiles, performing arts, painting and more. Participants return year after year because of the hands-on learning and inspirational instructors that are a hallmark of the program.

One such instructor is award-winning Chickasaw artist Brent Greenwood. Brent began painting at an early age and 25 years later, his vibrant, layered work is featured in live art demonstrations, galleries, markets and throughout Oklahoma as public murals. "It's my passion, and I think that's what drives me, to want to connect with my people, my tribes ... and engage them with the importance and values I put on culture and arts," Brent says. Through his roles as teacher and Chickasaw Nation Fine Arts Director, he works to instill a love of art in the next generation.

To close the episode, Brad and Quin look forward to the Southeastern Art Show and Market (SEASAM). SEASAM features both adult and youth artists from federally recognized southeastern tribes, displaying a variety of artistic styles and mediums. This annual market is just one of many exciting events taking place during the weeklong Chickasaw Annual Meeting and Festival.
