Once the Chickasaws had been forcibly relocated from their southeastern homeland east of the Mississippi River to Indian Territory, the challenges continued. Conflicts with local Plains tribes, Texas militia and other intruders led to the construction of Fort Washita, a treaty obligation with the U.S. government and an enduring Oklahoma landmark.
