The Evolution of the Natchez Trace

Richard Green

Traveling through the wilderness, the Indians followed animal trails. The trail from Nashville to Natchez became known as the Natchez Trace. In 1801, it came to prominence with an agreement allowing the U.S. Postal Service to improve the road and carry mail through Chickasaw and Choctaw lands. Today the Natchez Trace Parkway runs roughly along the trail.
