James Logan Colbert came to the Chickasaw Nation in the 1730s as a trader who wanted to live and settle there. He had several wives and many children who grew up learning Chickasaw ways. But given the father's ambition that his children would become leaders, he also knew they would need to learn the white man's ways. Meanwhile, the great leader who emerged then was Piominko.
