The 1786 Hopewell Treaty: Securing Our Boundaries

Brad Lieb

The Hopewell Treaty is displayed at the National Museum of the American Indian. It established a relationship between a young United States and the Chickasaw and Choctaw nations, acknowledging the sovereignty and drawing the boundaries of each tribe. The treaty also essentially created the government-to-government relationship that exists between the Chickasaws and U.S. today.
