Selling Coal Rights: Termination of Tribes Delayed

There were huge deposits of coal beneath lands owned by the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations, which the U.S. government wanted to buy. The reason the tribal governments weren’t abolished in the early 20th century is that the tribes hadn’t agreed to a price for the coal until 1947.
