Joshua Hinson is an artist and Director of the Department of Chickasaw Language in the Division of History and Culture for the Chickasaw Nation. Here, Joshua describes the gradual downturn of the Chickasaw language and how it took that negative turn to get people to realize what was unfortunately happening. It was in the 1960s and 1970s, he says, that the last generation of people who learned Chickasaw in their homes existed.
