Tribal historian Richard Green describes how the Civil War interrupted the progress the Chickasaws had been making in Indian Territory. After the war, punishment from the U.S. government for siding with the South included seeing railroads come into their lands. It brought a tidal wave of settlers who soon outnumbered Chickasaws in their own land.
