The late 1960s were a period of protest and unrest for many in the U.S., including American Indians. Neal McCaleb, Ambassador At-Large for the Chickasaw Nation, explains that as their cries of unfair treatment became louder, new hope came with the election of President Richard Nixon in 1968. He advocated solving the conflict through reliance on Indian self-government, inspired, perhaps, by a note from his college football coach, who himself was an American Indian.
