"He was the first to make this valley yield of its wealth" is the inscription on William Paul's great-great- grandfather's tombstone. It speaks of arable farmland, but implies a lot more— the growth and success of the community of Paul's Valley, which he founded; the plucky, pioneering spirit the Paul family displayed in settling the area; and a growing sense of pride that would help the Chickasaws flourish into the economically successful tribe of modern times.
