As Secretary of State for the Chickasaw Nation, Bill Lance has dedicated his career to serving his tribe. After graduating from East Central University with a bachelor's degree in nursing, Lance moved to the University of Oklahoma College of Public Health. There, he continued his medical studies, earning a master’s degree in public health.
As the administrator of the Chickasaw Nation Health System, Lance was in charge of $77 million and over 500 workers. He spearheaded the development of the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center. This was no small undertaking—the center measures a substantial 370,000 square feet. However, despite his in-depth medical expertise, Lance had further aspirations to contribute to the economic success of the Chickasaw Nation.
In 2009, Bill Lance was appointed Secretary of Commerce. As the longest-serving Secretary of Commerce in Chickasaw Nation history, he managed over 60 tribal-owned entities, more than tripling the net income during his tenure. He was appointed Secretary of State by Governor Bill Anoatubby in 2022. In this new role, he continues to represent the Nation on numerous business, civic and government associations.
Lance works on the board of directors for many companies, namely Chickasaw Nation Industries, RSE Enterprises and Global Gaming Solutions, LLC. Additionally, in 2013, he was recognized by Governor Mary Fallin when he was appointed to the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma's Board of Regents.
Proud of his heritage, he loves to teach his two granddaughters about the history of their Chickasaw heritage, imparting to them the importance of maintaining strong ties with their ancestors, including an understanding of the culture and language.
