Governor Johnston's Death

Governor Johnston, the last chief executive of the Five Tribes elected by his people, died on June 28, 1939. He became governor in 1898 and other than a short period from 1902 to 1904, he served as governor until 1939. As such, he served longer than any chief executive of an Indian nation in Oklahoma's history.
