The Chickasaw Nation celebrates and honors the experiences of elders. On the season 3 premiere episode of Elders Speak, host Lisa Billy is joined by Chickasaw elders Mary Jane Smith, Geneva Holman and Virginia Bolen to enlighten us and Chickasaw youth Jacob Carter with their perspective on the past. As they gather around the fire at Kullihoma, these elders discuss how being forbidden to speak the Chickasaw language impacted them throughout their childhood and adulthood. They also discuss learning English, tribal hymns, childhood nicknames and other cultural traditions they experienced. Ultimately, the sage wisdom from these strong Chickasaw elders helps Chickasaws and non-Chickasaws alike better understand this beautiful indigenous culture.
